A recipient of the Dean’s Full Scholarship Award, Onn San (Born July 29,1984 in Kuala Lumpur) is the first
composer from Malaysia to graduate with a Masters Degree in musical theatre writing at the New York
University, Tisch School of The Arts, Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.
His musical theatre writing credits include: THE SECRET LIFE OF NORA (Produced by Enfiniti Vision Media at Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur, October 2011); EAU BLANCHE! A NEW MUSICAL COMEDY (Graduate Musical Theatre Writing @ NYU); THE MEATBALL (The Lee Strasberg Institute @ The Marilyn Monroe Theatre, New York, NY); MADWORLD (SIBKL presents); DRUNK BEFORE DAWN (SIBKL presents @ Dewan Civic Petaling Jaya, Selangor, 2004 and Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, 2006) and GREEN TEA THE MUSICAL (University College Sedaya International School of Music presents @ Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, 2003)
Onn San also writes for film, TV and documentaries. He scored the film, JARUM HALUS (2008) directed by director Mark Tan, which was also premiered at the Cineasia Festival, Germany 2008. He also scored 2 short films, THE CUSTOMER (2009) and MAYBE IT’S YOU (2010) directed by Indie-film director, Khaliun Jargalsaikhan from Mongolia. Among his other scoring works include HEALING THE CHILDREN, a documentary narrated by the late Lynn Redgrave; INSIDE THE BLUE BOX – an infomercial for Tiffany & Co. and WHO ARE THE CHINESE? – a feature documentary about the history and the roots of the Chinese people.
Besides writing for theatre and film, he also orchestrated KING DAVID (Off-Broadway) where The New York Times commented on Onn’s orchestrations as “…lushly orchestrated”, while Backstage, NY says it was “…seductively lilting.” He then orchestrated a regional production of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TEACHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. The musical was staged at The Miracle Theater, Tennessee starring American Idol finalist, Melinda Doolittle.
Onn was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where he now resides with his family. He is a member of the Music Authors’ Copyright Protection Berhad (MACP). He also holds a Bachelor Degree in Classical Music (Piano) from UCSI University (formerly known as University College Sedaya International at time of graduation) and was nominated for Best Composer in the Musical Theater category at the Kakiseni’s Boh Cameronian Arts Awards 2012.
