Terence Liew has been musically inclined since the age of 6. In the midst of classical training, he grew great interest for contemporary music and jazz, and started learning at the age of 12. Bringing good knowledge of popular songs/ oldies with him, he studied jazz performance in UCSI University. During this period, he was the band member of Tinderboxx and Soulstream, both jazz-fusion and top 40s band respectively.
Terence wears many hats and shares his talent with various bands in the jazz circuit. He has performed with Urban Tribes, founded by renowned trumpeter and bandleader, Eddie Wen; and Red Quartet, founded by Martin Ngim, drummer of SuperBand and Ken Chung. The band has performed with famous artistes like Emil Chow, Zhang Zhen Yue, and Fish Leong.
Terence joined the Adil Johan Quartet (AJQ), an R&B and neo-soul influenced band as keyboardist and co-arranger. They have performed in famous jazz clubs such as Bangkok Jazz, No Black Tie, Groove Junction and Alexis. AJQ appeared on the Jazz Kitchen radio show at TraxxFM. They were the feature band for the opening night at the Penang Jazz Festival 2008. AJQ performed at the Singapore Mosaic Music Festival in March 2010 and produced their debut album “Re-arrange’ that same year.
In 2009, he joined Q Sound as their keyboardist. Q Sound is founded by Marques Young, current co-principal of the trombone section of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Among the various events that he has performed with the band are the MPO Midweek Performance Teaser at KLCC, Petronas Annual Dinner at Bintulu, Sarawak, as part of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Outreach Programme, A Tribute to Miles Davis, with Norman Edwards (drums) and Shareef Clayton (trumpet) from New York.
Other performance gigs include Opening Ceremony of the Malaysian Formula 1 Car at the KLCC (2010), One Night Special at Delucca with Malaysian local pop artis, Will Ng (2010), the Malaysia Music Festival 2011, CIMB Bank Client Appreciation Nights “Ye Shang Hai” in Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Penang and KL, and Overtime Acoustic Challenge Grand Finals at KL Live. Terence has performed with artists such as Victor Wong, Gary Cao, Z Chen, Will Ng, and Dasha Logan at prolific events like BMW launches and the Formula 1 GP events.
Apart from performing, Terence is also a sessionist for Alibi Music Artists from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Terence is currently a piano lecturer at UCSI University and is the co-partner of his music academy, D Vida Music Academy.
