Ji Hye-Gyung


Dr. HYE-GYUNG JI, a native of South Korea, is an Associate Professor of Piano at South Plains College in Levelland, TX, where she has taught courses in applied music and group piano, accompanied choir and jazz vocal ensemble, and collaborated with instrumentalists and faculty since 2007.  While pursuing her degree, Dr. Ji had served as an adjunct piano professor at Lubbock Christian University for two years and as a teaching/accompanying assistant at Texas Tech University before coming to SPC.  As an active collaborator, Dr. Ji has performed with Dr. Lynn Ledbetter as The Freesia Duo.

A winner of the Texas Tech University Symphony Orchestra Soloist Concerto Competitions, Dr. Ji was chosen as a piano soloist for “For Excellence In Performance” in 2002 by Pi Kappa Lambda and has actively performed solo, lecture, and collaborative guest artist recitals both in the United States and South Korea.  Her performances were featured through “Music from Texas Tech” on KOHM Classical Radio Station.  In addition, Dr. Ji has given a presentation, lecture, and new faculty recital at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA).

As a piano pedagogue, Dr. Ji has adjudicated Young Artist Piano Competition at Texas State University (2013), LMTA Piano Performance Competition (2011), TMTA State Convention All-Star Festival (2005-2007), and National Guild of Piano Teachers Pastoral Festival (2003-2008).  She also helped editing supplementary repertoire books for a Korean piano method called “Klavier” and wrote an article entitled “The Importance of Awareness While Practicing” issued at International Piano Korea (Vol. 77/ July, 2009).  She was invited to South Korea with Dr. Lora Deahl for Artist Residency, presenting recitals and masterclasses at the Music Academy for the Young at Seoul Arts Center, Preparatory School for Young Artists at the Korean National Univ. of Arts, Myung Ji University, BeakSeok University, Chung-Ang University, YeWon Junior High School of the Arts, and Manhattan Music School.

With distinction, Dr. Ji holds a B.M. degree in Piano Performance from Chung-Ang University in South Korea, where she studied under Dr. Wan-Kyu Chung, a President of the Korean Association of Piano Pedagogy (KAPP), and both her M.M. in Piano Performance and D.M.A. in Piano Pedagogy from Texas Tech University, where she studied under Dr. Lora Deahl.
