Clarence Lam has recently earned his Bachelor of Music degree at the RNCM with first class honours as well as Fellowship of Royal Schools of Music with distinction. He proudly rounded off his studies at the RNCM by gaining the highest undergraduate piano recital mark, which won him the Alfred Clay Scholarship. As a winner of Musicians Benevolent Fund Postgraduate Performance Award, he is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London this September, pursuing a Master of Music degree under renowned British pianist, Ian Fountain.
Born into a music family in Hong Kong in 1991, Clarence began learning the piano with his father at the age of five. In 2004, he won a Music Scholarship to study at Oundle School in the UK, where he studied with Head of Keyboard, Alec Hone and later with James Kirby. Although mainly a pianist, Clarence was also a violist and a violinist, serving as the concertmaster of the Oundle School Symphony Orchestra.
In 2009, Clarence began his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutelage of the deputy Head of Keyboard, Helen Krizos and has since worked with distinguished pianists such as John Lill, Michel Beroff, Nelson Goerner, Pascal Devoyon, Philippe Cassard, Stephen Hough and Yevgeny Sudbin. Clarence was winner of the RNCM Beethoven Concerto Competition and the Emmanuel Prize. He was also a prize-winner at the Christopher Duke Piano Recital Competition in the UK.
Clarence gives recitals regularly throughout the UK and has performed in Russia, China and Malaysia. Recent highlights include a recital for the Yamaha Lunchtime Conservatoire Series in London, a recital for the Oundle International Festival and concerto performances with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra on two consecutive evenings in March 2013, as part of the RNCM 40th Anniversary celebrations and the RNCM Beethoven Festival.
